November 2005:
A brief summary of what's been going on with my locs:
As of August of 2004 I went from having my locs palm rolled to latching. I love it! It gives me the freedom to wash my
hair as frequent as I want with washing $50 worth of maintaince down the drain.
Products I'm using:
I still believe that when it comes to products, less is better. At the moment I'm using Pantene Relaxed and Natural Shampoo,
Oyin' Greg Juice and I have a bottle of the Oyin's Honey Hemp conditioner which I haven't had a chance to try yet. Before
I was just using an olive oil hot oil treatment as a conditioner for my locks. And that's it!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To help maintain my locs I visit a professional loctician regularly - about every
2 - 2 1/2 weeks. Here's what I get done during each session:
Session 1 - October 11, 2002:
-
The hair is washed and condtitioned followed by a hot oil treatment.
-
After the oil is rinsed out my loctician parted my hair with a small
toothed comb into a small section.
-
A small amount of gel is applied to the section and the hair is twisted
with the comb in a twirling motion - clockwise -until the hair looks like a small shiny cylinder. (between parting, scalp
is moisturized with Natty Dred Creme)
-
This same technique is applied throughout the entire head. The hair
is parted evenly so as all the twists are uniformed in size.
-
After my entire head is completed, I am placed under a dryer to
set my twists. My hair is really thick so I'm under there for almost 45 min.
-
Hair is sprayed with a light sheen.
Session 2:
-
My loctician cleans my hair, but not in the conventional way in the form of shampoo.
She uses a moisture cleansing agent that doesn't foam or have suds. It applied to the hair in spray bottle form. A clean, soft white cloth is used to clean
the scalp carefully as to not disturb my not yet mature locks.
-
Afterwards, my whole head is retwisted - hair that has come loose and newgrowth and scalp
is moisturized.
-
Hair is set under the dryer.
-
Hair is sprayed with a light sheen.
Session 3:
-
Hair is washed for the first time with shampoo. No conditioner is applied to my hair
yet. (conditioning in the very early stages of locking with cause the hair to come loose slowing down the locking progress)
-
Afterwards, my whole head is retwisted - hair that has come loose and newgrowth and scalp
is moisturized.
-
Hair is set under the dryer.
-
Hair is sprayed with a light sheen.
Session 4:
-
The hair is washed and condtitioned followed by a hot oil treatment.
-
After oil is rinsed out, my whole head is retwisted - hair that has come loose
and newgrowth and scalp is moisturized.
-
Hair is set under the dryer.
-
Hair is sprayed with a light sheen.
Session 5:
Session 6:
In Between Visits
If you choose to keep up your hair with the assistance of a loctician, it's important
that you learn to take care of you hair on your OWN in between visits. The maintance for my hair at this stage is so
far very simple! Here's what I do:
-
At night I sleep with a fitted satin wave cap to keep my twists from moving around while
I rest. I was having problems in the very begining with my twists coming loose despite my not using too much oil or water.
I've found that using this fitted cap was keeping down the frizz and loose twists.
-
If parts of my hair need to be retwisted, I lightly mist the hair with a spray bottle containing
plain water and twist in one motion in a clockwise manner. (hair does not need to be retwisted everyday and
definitley not while it's dry. Doing one or both of these can cause breakage to hair!)
-
Hair and scalp is lightly moisturized with a LIGHT oil made of natural ingredients.
I started with Kemi Oyl but switched to Tea Tree Oil - it helps with the itchies and dandruff. I only need to do this
once or twice a week. Over oiling the hair will cause my twists to come loose.
-
At this stage of locking, I keep my hair dry at all times! I make sure I shower with a plastic
cap.
And that's it! Very simple. Very easy! At this stage of my hair it's basically get up and go
and I'm luuvving it! Of course as my hair grows and mature my hair routine a maintaince will probably change. I will continue
to document this changes through all stages.
